Pleasanton Shooting Tied To Animal Abuse Allegations: Police

Police say that suspect Joshua Kaplan went to the victim's home to confront him about alleged abuse of a dog.

PLEASANTON, CA — The 71-year-old victim of a shooting in Pleasanton on Saturday is in stable condition, according to a Monday update from the Pleasanton Police Department.

A victim was being treated for life threatening injuries after he was shot in his home Saturday.

The shooting occurred after a dispute at a home on the 3600 block of Vineyard Avenue at around 3 p.m. Saturday, police said. According to witness statements, suspect Joshua Kaplan went to the victim's home to confront him about alleged animal abuse. At some point thereafter, Kaplan allegedly shot the victim at least six times, according to PPD Lt. Brandon Stocking.

At some point, the victim retrieved a shotgun, but police do not believe he fired it.

Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries. The dog involved was taken to the East County Animal Shelter while the investigation continues. Police said in an email shared with reporters that there were no obvious signs of injury to the dog when animal services took custody.

The suspect, 50-year-old Joshua Kaplan, remains in police custody as of Monday.

Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident, and there is no threat to public safety. Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and no further information will be released.
