BART Transbay Tube Shut Down Due To Nearby Damaged Gas Pipe

The Tube was shut down Thursday afternoon.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — BART service has been restored through the Transbay Tube Thursday afternoon following a gas line break in West Oakland, but officials warned that riders should expect major, residual systemwide delays because of the earlier closure. BART had stopped service until further notice through the Transbay Tube between San Francisco and the East Bay Thursday because of a damaged natural gas pipeline near the West Oakland station. BART initially reported the problem around 2:40 p.m.

A construction company damaged the large pipeline and the Oakland Fire Department has instructed BART to not run trains through the tube, BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said.

There is no damage to the Transbay Tube itself, and trains are still running elsewhere in the system, Trost said. Riders are encouraged to take Alameda-Contra Costa Transit buses
to and from the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco or ferries to get across the Bay.
