PLEASANTON, CA — A beloved K-9 of the Pleasanton Police Department died recently after serving the community for eight years, police said Wednesday. Gandalf II, a Chihuahua-Schipperke mix was a great community relations asset for police, helping a non-verbal child talk, calming people in a car crash and forcing smiles on the toughest of police officers, according to police.

Gandalf served alongside animal services officer Roy Ficken handling animal-related calls and educating children about animal safety. Both retired in 2011 but volunteered at the police department for a couple
more years, police said.

Police said Gandalf holds a special place in the police department's history and officers and staff will always be grateful for his service.
