SUNOL, CA — Caltrans will temporarily close a major onramp connecting westbound state Highway 84 and southbound Interstate 680 in the unincorporated Sunol Valley area of Alameda County as part of major construction work to convert the two-lane state highway into a new expressway during the next three years.

The westbound Highway 84 connector to southbound Interstate 680 will be closed between 11 p.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday. A detour will be in place directing motorists onto northbound Interstate 680 to exit at Sunol Boulevard in Pleasanton. From there, they will turn left at Sunol Boulevard and be redirected to the southbound Interstate 680 onramp.

The purpose of the closure is to allow Caltrans to modify the westbound Highway 84 striping to eliminate the lane drop where the ramp splits between northbound and southbound Interstate 680. The new stage will have striping which will let motorists know that the right lane on westbound Highway 84 is for northbound Interstate 680, and the left lane on westbound Highway 84 is for southbound Interstate 680 traffic and for Paloma Way, which connects 680 with the town of Sunol.
