Poway Man Dies After SUV Crashes in Mira Mesa

A Poway resident was killed early Sunday morning when the SUV he was driving overturned on the eastbound Mira Mesa Boulevard onramp to southbound Interstate 15, according to a dispatcher with the California Highway Patrol.

Valente Martinez, 30, was declared dead by San Diego Fire personnel at the scene of the accident, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

The crash was reported around 1:40 a.m., and fire crews found the green 1997 Ford Explorer on its side and Martinez partially ejected from the driver's-side window, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. The coroner also reported that Martinez sustained major head trauma and was not wearing a seat belt.

The CHP, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the coroner's office didn't have information about the cause of the crash or if alcohol or drugs were involved.
