Poway Students Improve Scores on California Standard Tests

The results of the 2012 California Standards Test were recently released recently, and the number of students in schools meeting or exceeding state standards continues to increase, according to the district.

In English language arts, 81 percent of Poway Unified students scored at proficient or above, with 69 percent scoring the same in math.

“We are seeing these positive trends at our schools, especially when looking across multiple years,” said Eric Lehew, director of Student Assessment. “Teachers use this data, not only as a check on student performance, but each fall teacher teams consider improvements based on these scores and other measures.”

Eighth graders at saw scores in algebra rise 21 percent, topped only in the district by math scores among fourth graders at , which rose 26 percent.

Improving algebra proficiency was a major goal for Meadowbrook teachers.

“Our teachers review these scores and make adjustments,” said Miguel Carrillo, principal of Meadowbrook. “We have been able to do this while increasing the number of students taking algebra.”

California Standard Tests are taken by students in grades 2-11, and have five performance levels: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic and far below basic.
