SDSU Falls to BYU for Season's Second Loss

Hot three-point shooting for the Cougars too much for the Aztecs.

San Diego State’s men’s basketball team lost today’s big showdown with BYU at Viejas Arena, 80-67. It was the second loss of the season for the Aztecs, whose other loss was to the seventh-ranked Cougars, 71-58 in Provo.

The sixth-ranked Aztecs never led, as the Cougars’ stifling zone defense and knack for hitting three-pointers kept them comfortably ahead for most of the game.

The game was the culmination of a week of fan frenzy across San Diego, with students camping out for days for the chance of free general admission tickets. This is the sixth consecutive 20-win season for SDSU, which now has a 27-2 overall record, 12-2 in Mountain West Conference play.

Although the game was briefly stopped with about 33 seconds left when fans began throwing things onto the court, no arrests were reports, according to San Diego police.

The Aztecs will hit the road to face the University of Wyoming on Monday.
