Search Continues for Missing Borrego Hiker

Guillermo Pino, 24, went missing Sunday while exploring caves with his family.

Dozens of searchers continued looking Wednesday morning for a 24-year-old hiker that was reported missing Sunday in a remote area near Borrego Springs.

Guillermo Pino was exploring caves in an area known as Arroyo Tapiado with his family Sunday, and was last seen around noon, according to the Sheriff’s Department. It is believed that Pino had no shoes, water, flashlight or cell phone with him when he went missing, according to the Sheriff’s Department. He was wearing jeans and a red shirt, weighs 180 pounds and is 6 feet tall.

Pino was described as a fairly experienced hiker with no known medical conditions.

Eleven different agencies are participating in the search for Pino, including the Sheriff’s Department and a Border Patrol search and rescue unit. The 50 to 60 searchers resumed looking Wednesday morning and will continue until dark, according to the Sheriff’s Department. A helicopter that had been helping in the search was not able to fly Wednesday because of the weather.
