The fire began around 3:15 p.m. spread to about 15 acres.

A wildfire spread over about 15 open acres Friday afternoon in the East County highlands near Ramona, briefly threatening a single back-country home but causing no known structural damage or injuries.

The blaze erupted about 3:15 p.m. in grassy, flat terrain north of state Route 78, near Slaughterhouse Road in the Witch Creek area, according to Cal Fire.

Ground crews attacked the flames by ground and aboard two air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters, getting the blaze contained within about an hour, said Ray Chaney, a battalion chief with the state agency.
