The child died at Rady Children’s Hospital after being transported there by an awaiting air ambulance, according to the sheriff’s department.
The girl’s mother saw her fall into the large, murky pond, a 911 call was made and the parents searched for the child, according to a report from the Medical Examiner’s Office. She was found at the deepest end under about 7 feet of water after responding deputies and firefighters stripped off their gear and went into the pond searching by feel due to the poor visibility of the water, according to the sheriff’s department.
Authorities received the frantic 911 call at 3:15 p.m. and sheriff’s deputies, CalFire and Highway Patrol units were on the scene within minutes. When they arrived they found two people thrashing about in the irregularly shaped pond looking for the child.
