RHS Teen Drivers Can Wise Up With CHP's Start Smart Class

On Wednesday, Ramona teens and their parents will have an opportunity to learn the safety of the road before they get behind the wheel—an invaluable lesson in a town that sees many fatal car accidents.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) provides a free class for new drivers and their parents or guardians to clearly understand their responsibilities when beginning driving—Start Smart. The course, which will be offered at Ramona High School, is taught by CHP officers, according to the agency's website.

CHP says officers will discuss traffic collision avoidance techniques, collision causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities and seat belt usage.

In an effort to have a true impact on young drivers, testimonies will be provided by officers who have investigated fatal collisions involving teens and by family members who have lost love ones in traffic collisions.

The two-hour class is free and encouraged by Ramona High.

"RHS wants our students prepared in all areas of life including driver safety," the school's website stated. "RHS is mandating that students receive Smart Start Certification prior to receiving a parking pass."

CHP's website says that 66 percent of all fatality collisions are caused by teens and the leading cause of deaths for ages 15-20 is car crashes.

Ramona's Start Smart class will be held on March 6 from 7-9 p.m. in the Performing Arts Wing on campus. Young drivers-to-be can see Mrs. Claxton to sign up. Parents can contact Assistant Principal Antoinette Rodriguez at 760-787-4007 with any questions.
