Sheriff's Staff Moves Into Expanded Substation in Renovated Former Library

An interview room, expanded work spaces, large meeting room and an office for Child Protective Services staff are among the new facilities.

Arriving in the lobby at the new sheriff's substation quarters at the former library on Montecito Road, the first big change a visitor notices is the open reception area.

There is no security glass and there are no protective bars.

It's a deliberate message being sent.

"We want to be open to people," said Lt. Julie Sutton on Friday.

Sutton and her detectives, administrative staff, crime prevention officer and Senior Volunteer Patrol are now operating out of the spacious new quarters in the renovated former library building. The patrol deputies will continue to operate out of the other part of the substation at the county complex. Among the changes planned there are bigger work spaces for deputies and the California Highway Patrol, plus a gym.

Three staff members from Child Protective Services have moved into the new offices from the Health and Human Services location in the same complex.

"It gives them a bit more room over at Health and Human Services and it will enable closer communication with their staff," Sutton said.

Sutton plans an open house for the public. No date has been set yet.
