- It’s kitten season! Mother cats are having their litters, nursing them, then leaving them to hunt for food before returning to their kitties. The San Diego County Department of Animal Services is asking that residents hold off on immediately scooping up the litters they find in their neighborhoods. If the kittens are not in danger from predators, or traffic, or if they are not visibly sick or injured, it is best to let them be. Observe the kittens from a distance so that the mother feels safe enough to return to her babies. If the mother does not return after six hours, you can begin to care for the animals yourself, or contact a local animal shelter for an appointment to surrender the kittens.
