As Friends Go, He Was Ready for An Upgrade

A couple of buddies get into it in Rancho Santa Margarita.

By Martin Henderson

You can't choose your family but you can choose your friends, and in the case of one Rancho Santa Margarita man, he may want to reevaluate his selection process.

According to the blotter of the Orange County Sheriff's Department, a man called for help last Friday to report that his deranged friend was attacking him.

Both men had been drinking, the informant said, but his friend took the informant's cell phone and smashed it against a wall when he tried to call for help. The report didn't indicate the subject of the dispute.

Not only did the friend kill the phone, but the informant reported that his friend was threatening to kill him, too. That threat was confirmed by a separate phone call two minutes earlier from a witness who heard the ruckus.

The call from the man, made from an inside location while the friend was outside, was made Friday, 10:44 p.m., from the 100 block of Aliento.

This report was culled from the Orange County Sheriff's website. Not all facts in each report are made public; the outcome of the report may differ from the original blotter item. There should be no assumption of guilt based on this limited information.
