Fires Contained Near 15 in Cajon Pass, Near 18 in Waterman Canyon

Fires that broke out Saturday afternoon in the Cajon Pass and Waterman Canyon were declared contained by sundown Sunday Aug. 18, according to the Forest Service.

The Cleghorn Fire broke out around 5:25 p.m. Aug. 17 near the Cleghorn ramps on the 15 Freeway, snarled traffic, prompted closures on the 15 and the 138, and forced temporary evacs at a McDonalds restaurant and a gas station convenience store, Forest Service officials said.

The burned area was estimated at 110 acres and it was declared 100 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Inspiration Fire was reported about 4:20 p.m. Aug. 17 near Inspiration Point and it resulted in temporary closures on State Route 18 below Crestline, according to the Forest Service. It burned about 3 acres and it was also declared contained Sunday.

Smoke from the fires was visible for miles, in the Redlands-Loma Linda area and beyond, at sundown Saturday.

The burn areas are about 10 miles apart as a bird flies, Carol Underhill of the San Bernardino National Forest said in an email Sunday.
