Man Runs from Taxi to Avoid Paying Fare, Struck by Another Vehicle on University

A Redlands man who jumped out of a taxi on University Street to apparently avoid paying his fare was struck by another vehicle and sustained a broken leg, a city spokesman said.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Tuesday June 4 at University and Sylvan Boulevard, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said.

The man jumped out of a taxi and ran without paying and he was struck by a black Nissan Altima going south on University, Baker said in a phone interview Thursday. The 55-year-old Redlands resident suffered a broken leg and other injuries, and he was hospitalized in stable condition.

As of Thursday morning he had not been charged or arrested, Baker said.
