Redlands Man Fatally Shot in Riverside, Suspect Accused of Murder

A Redlands man was fatally shot Friday afternoon in an apartment complex parking lot in Riverside, according to the Riverside County coroner.

The shooting occurred just before 1 p.m. May 31 at the Pepper Tree Apartments, 7911 Arlington Ave., Riverside police Sgt. Mike Barney said in a statement.

Riverside Fire and AMR ambulance personnel arrived and found Jabari Jones, 35, of Redlands, lying next to a car suffering from gunshot wounds, Barney said.

Jones was taken to Riverside Community Hospital on Magnolia Avenue, where he was pronounced deceased at 1:36 p.m., coroner's personnel said.

Police identified identified a suspect allegedly seen running through the complex. Leroy Burton, 35, of Riverside, was taken into custody shortly after 4 p.m. on Sierra Street, according to inmate records.

Burton booked Friday night on suspicion of murder. He was held Monday June 3 at Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta on $1 million bail. He has a court date Tuesday in downtown Riverside.
