21 Arrested At DUI Checkpoint In Hermosa Beach: Police
Police say one driver tried to flee the DUI checkpoint Saturday night, prompting a pursuit.
HERMOSA BEACH, CA — Hermosa Beach police said they arrested 21 people during a DUI checkpoint Saturday night along Pier Avenue.
Officers ran the checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the 500 block of Pier Avenue, according to the department. The location was selected based on data about DUI crashes and citations, according to authorities.
During the checkpoint, officers screened 506 vehicles, according to the Hermosa Beach Police Department. In all, nine people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, including a wrong-way driver who led officers on a pursuit, according to police. Another 12 people were arrested for driving without a license or driving with a suspended license and 15 vehicles were impounded, according to police.

"That brings Hermosa's 2025 checkpoint totals to 18 DUI arrests and 22 no/suspended license arrests," the department said in a statement Sunday afternoon. "40 lives potentially saved."
Funding for DUI checkpoints is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The grant money is awarded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — a federal agency that says its mission is to save lives and prevent injuries on the road through actions that include education, research and enforcement.
