REDONDO BEACH, CA — A new housing complex next to the South Bay Galleria is inching closer to development after the Redondo Beach Planning Commission approved a resolution connected with the project.

The development project, known as the South Bay Galleria Mixed-Use Project, was set in motion in 2019. It has so far been divided between two phases, the first of which includes a 300-unit development and a redesign of the mall and a skate park, according to city officials. The second phase, which, if approved, would create 350 more units, according to city officials.

Of those hundreds of apartments proposed in phase two, 35 of them would be used as "very low" income housing, while 70 would be low-income apartments due to California housing laws. At least 15 would be sold as townhomes.

Although approved, construction has yet to begin for phase one.

Phase two of the project still has to go through multiple stages of development before construction begins, according to Redondo Beach Planning Manager Sean Scully. That includes the developer submitting their building plans and going through the City Council.

"With a project of this size that could take a few months minimum," Scully told Patch. "At this time it's too early to say when we could see construction or when the residences would be available for occupancy."

An outdoor plaza, rooftop terraces, courtyards, and perimeter parkways would also be constructed as part of the project.

Construction would take over a segment of the South Bay Galleria's parking lot along Kingsdale Avenue.

The next step, according to Scully, would be for city officials to review construction plans and make sure they meet zone ordinances and other requirements.
