Blotter: Gardener Threatened Over Noise

Criminal threats, stabbings and burglaries are all in a week's work for the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Redondo Beach police officers were busy April 28. In one case, they arrested a man after he allegedly threatened his neighbor's gardener; in another, police believe a woman tried to stab her boyfriend for cutting off her Internet access.

Officers also investigated eight burglaries, but no arrests were made.

Nothing Suspicious About a U-Haul Circling the Block at 4 a.m.

Police arrested two people early in the morning on April 25 after an officer spotted a U-Haul van circling the neighborhood near Palos Verdes Boulevard and South Helberta Avenue.

According to a news release from Lt. Joe Hoffman, once they spotted the officer, the two people parked the van and left, only to return and drive away a short time later.

The officer pulled the pair over and discovered that both were on active parole. Police also found a container full of different types of pills as well as a brand new mountain bike in the U-Haul. Neither person claimed the mountain bike, Hoffman said.

Police booked the pair on charges of possession of a controlled substance and violating parole.

Police: Gardener Threatened Over Leaf Blower Noise

One Redondo Beach resident was booked into jail April 28 after allegedly threatening to shoot his neighbor's gardener for making too much noise with a leaf blower.

Martin Monahan, 51, "said he was going to shoot the victim if he continued to use the lawn blower," police spokesman Sgt. Phil Keenan said.

When police arrived, Monahan surrendered peacefully, according to a news release from the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Monahan was booked on suspicion of making a criminal threat. He was being held on $50,000 bail, Keenan said.

Police: Woman Stabbed Boyfriend Over Internet Access

Police charged a woman with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon April 28 after she allegedly stabbed her boyfriend for shutting down her Internet access.

Keenan confirmed that police believe Carla Bradford, 40, stabbed her boyfriend with a steak knife in their home on Cluster Lane after he turned the power off so he could do work on the house. Apparently, Bradford was upset that the power outage also cut off access to the Internet.

The victim, who was not identified, sustained a cut to his face, though he managed to fight off the rest of the attacks, according to police.

Driver Charged with DUI After Striking Pedestrian

In the early hours of April 29, a car collided with a man on Pacific Coast Highway near Herondo Street, sending the man to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

According to police reports, the victim ran across the street and managed to dodge one car before a second hit him. The victim hit the windshield before rolling onto the pavement and hitting his head, police said.

The driver was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, police said.

Victim Fights Off Would-Be Intruder

Last Saturday, a man was sleeping in his home on Anita Street when he awoke to a pounding sound and his motion-sensing back door light illuminating, police said.

When he opened the door, the victim spotted man hiding nearby, and he yelled, "Get out!" police said.

Instead of fleeing, the would-be intruder grabbed at the victim's face and covered his mouth, but the victim fought back, police said.

The stranger fled. Officers later discovered a hat, cellphone and skateboard near a neighbor's knocked-down trash can, police said.

Investigators are on the case.

Police are searching for two men who used a key to open the cash register and steal money from a business in the 3900 block of Inglewood Ave on April 26. The first person is described as a black man in his 40s standing 5 feet 10 inches and weighing about 180 pounds. The second person is a black man in his 20s standing 5 feet 10 inches and weighing about 170 pounds. Both men have black hair, police said.

Someone also broke into a business on Fisherman's Wharf on April 25 and stole money and two skill saws, police said. The thief entered the business through the window.

In residential burglaries, police are searching for the person who cut a steel cable and stole three electric bikes in an underground parking area in the 500 block of Esplanade on April 14.

Someone also walked into an unfinished home in the 800 block of Avenue C through the side door to the garage, and walked out with a washing machine, a dryer and a range on April 26.

On April 22, a thief stole jewelry and watches from a home in the 200 block of Avenue D. Apparently, he or she entered the home by climbing onto a balcony and walking in through the unlocked bedroom door.

Two trucks and an SUV on Rockefeller Lane had their driver's side front windows smashed overnight between April 25 and 26. Apple iPods were taken from two of the vehicles, while someone stole two pairs of scissors and a Bluetooth earpiece from the third vehicle.
