Truck Rams Protesters In Los Angeles, 2 Injured, Driver Detained: Police

The protesters were marching in Westwood in support of regime change in Iran when a U-Haul truck accelerated toward pedestrians.

WEST LOS ANGELES, CA — A U-Haul truck rammed a crowd of protesters Sunday afternoon in West Los Angeles, injuring two people, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The man driving the truck was detained pending further investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department posted on social media Sunday evening, adding one man was confirmed to have been struck and was treated at the scene but no significant injuries had been reported.

"This incident is being actively investigated to determine what led to the collision," according to the department.

The protesters were marching in Westwood in support of regime change in Iran. The crash occurred on Veteran Avenue shortly after 3:30 p.m. and was caught on video.

It showed a U-Haul truck with a man riding on top of it appear to accelerate into the crowd of marchers as onlookers screamed.

Both patients evaluated by the fire department declined medical transportation, according to the agency, which reported in an update around 4:45 p.m. that the crowd was voluntarily dispersing.

The protest, which had been growing throughout Sunday afternoon, included hundreds of people who flocked to an area near the Federal Building at the corner of Veteran Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard to show support for the nearly 600 Iranians who lost their lives demonstrating against the economic crisis in the Middle East.
