City Council Votes to Raise Fees for Seaside Lagoon, Tennis Courts
The Redondo Beach City Council agrees to fee hikes proposed for Fire, Police and the Recreation and Community Services departments.

The Redondo Beach City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to raise fees for the Alta Vista tennis courts and Seaside Lagoon and to impose fees for oversized vehicles.
The council also voted to reduce the fees for CDs and DVDs from the City Clerk's Office to $1 each.

Councilman Matthew Kilroy originally asked about the cost of administering fees, especially with the CD and DVD decrease, saying it would cost "more money to charge and collect the doggone fee and the paperwork."

"In my opinion, we ought to just eliminate the fee entirely and save some money," he said.
City Attorney Mike Webb said part of the motivation for lowering the fee was to avoid a legal challenge.

"This fee has been challenged in other jurisdictions," he said, noting that "imposing no fee is an option."
Though the council briefly considered only imposing a fee when more than five discs were required, they ultimately decided to accept the recommendation to charge $1 per disc.
Under the new fee schedule, adults will pay $5 or $6 instead of $4.25 or $5, respectively, to use the Alta Vista tennis courts, depending on the time of use. Children and teens will have to pay $3 to use the tennis courts. With these fees, as well as increased fees for seniors and lights, the city will make an estimated $28,000 per year.
Seaside Lagoon's $1 increase in user fees will bring in about $70,000 per year, according to the city's calculations.
The Police Department will institute fees for oversized-vehicle registrations and out-of-town visitor permits. The department would also institute a civil penalty of $125 for people who park oversized vehicles on the street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. on weekdays without a permit, which is a violation of the city code
Fees for standby personnel services from the Fire Department will also increase.
