Educators, Parents to Protest Cuts

District officials, administrators, teachers and parents will picket in front of on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to protest further cuts to California's K-12 public school system.

The "Cuts Hurt Redondo Beach Kids" protest, which is spearheaded by the California Teachers Association, aims to persuade lawmakers to extend the temporary tax hikes, which expire in June, according to a news release from the . Otherwise, the legislature will be forced to cut an additional $13 billion from the state's budget to close the $25 billion deficit.

The state has already cut $12 billion from the budget.

"We have already sustained cuts that have had a huge impact on the job that educators can do for our students," South Bay United Teachers Executive Director Sandra Goins wrote in an email to news media. "Our schools stand to lose millions of dollars if nothing is done to prevent further cuts to education. We simply cannot sit back and wait for that to happen."

The protest is part of of coordinated efforts in California organized by the California Teachers Association throughout the week of May 9-13. On Friday, educators will travel to a much larger rally at Pershing Square to encourage community members to tell their state senators and assembly members to extend the tax hikes.
