Gas Company to Finish 190th Street Work by May 25

The project was to wrap up before the 2010 winter holidays; however, rainy weather and conflicts with other utilities delayed the finish date.

Work on the Southern California Gas Company pipelines on 190th Street  in Redondo Beach should be completed by May 25, according to Gas Company Public Affairs Manager Marcella Low.

The work, which involves federally mandated inspections and maintenance, has been ongoing since September 2010.

According to a letter sent to residents before the work started, the project would be finished by the holidays; however, rainy weather and other factors delayed the end date.

"The main delay resulted from conflict with other utilities' substructure," Low said. "They were not willing to relocate their equipment as requested.

"This caused the Gas Company to have to redesign the project; request city approval for the new design; and purchase additional materials," she said, calling the delay "unavoidable."

As part of the project, the Gas Company shut down the No. 1 lanes of 190th Street between Blossom and Green lanes. Additionally, stretches of 190th Street were closed entirely multiple times during the project.
