Judge: RUHS Sex Assault Suspect Must Stand Trial

Sylvester Gene Rawls, is accused of assaulting a teen.

An ex-con arrested in January must stand trial on two felony counts of forcible copulation, Torrance Superior Court Judge Hector Guzman said Wednesday.

Long Beach resident Sylvester Gene Rawls, 46, is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl at in August 2003.

At the time of the arrest, spokesman Lt. Joe Hoffman said Rawls was linked to the assault through DNA evidence from the original crime scene.

Rawls gave a DNA sample after he was convicted in federal court of conspiracy to manufacture PCP, authorities said.

Rawls' arraignment is scheduled for May 25.
