South Bay Students Win Water Conservation Art Contest

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Three South Bay students have won the grand prize in this year's West Basin Municipal Water District "Being Water Wise Is" art contest.

Students from the 3rd to 12th grade were tasked with creating an art piece about water scarcity and proactive ways to reduce water usage in their neighborhoods.

Shaylah Galvan, a 5th grader from 186th Street Elementary in Gardena, Jina Ng, an 8th grader from Palos Verdes Intermediate School/Seoul Arts Academy in Rancho Palos Verdes and Eli Kano, a 10th grader from Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, won the the grand prize for their pieces illustrating the importance of water conservation.

“These young artists’ work is an encouraging reminder that the next generation not only understands the importance of protecting our water resources but is also eager to lead the charge in advocating for water sustainability, West Basin Board President and Division II Director Gloria D. Gray said in a statement last week.

The three students beat out more than 700 other submissions to win an Apple iPad, a digital stylus and a $25 Apple Store gift card.

Their artwork will now be submitted to the Metropolitan Water District’s regional art contest for an opportunity to be featured in an art calendar next year.
