Rare Parasitic Infection Spread From Raccoons Found In South Bay
County health officials are investigating two human cases of Baylisascaris procyonis, also known as raccoon roundworm.
REDONDO BEACH, CA — Two human cases of a rare parasitic infection spread from raccoons were discovered in the South Bay, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Baylisascaris procyonis, also known as raccoon roundworm, is a type of parasite that lives in the intestines of raccoons. Though it is not harmful to raccoons, it can infect a human's spinal cord, brain and eyes and lead to swelling of the brain and eye disease.
Public Health officials said that while the parasite is rare in people and the risk to the public is low, the infections are concerning due to the large population of raccoons living near people. People can become infected if they consume dirt, water or material contaminated with infected raccoon feces.

“Our health is closely linked to the health of animals around us,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. “Simple precautions, like washing your hands regularly, avoiding direct contact with wild animals and their waste, keeping pets healthy, and preventing wildlife from sheltering or living in or next to our homes or properties can help keep our neighborhoods and families safe and healthy.”
Although rare, household pets can also become infected if they ingest raccoon feces or contaminated materials, LA Public Health said. Infected cats cannot transmit it in their feces and dogs rarely do, according to the health department.

Symptoms of raccoon roundworm infection can appear one to four weeks after exposure and include nausea, tiredness, loss of coordination, lack of attention to surroundings, loss of muscle control and blindness.
If you or someone in your family is experiencing symptoms of raccoon roundworm infection, the health department said to speak with your healthcare provider. Anyone who is experiencing severe symptoms, such as loss of muscle control or blindness, should seek immediate medical attention.
