REDONDO BEACH, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Peggy Kramer who nominated Mike Garcia of Redondo Beach. Kramer attends meetings where Garcia teaches the community about organic plants and environment and drought concerns.

How do you know the local hero?

I attend his meetups once a month.

What does the local hero do?

Mike hosts the monthly meetup meetings of the Organic Gardening and Regenerative Permaculture meetup. He leads discussions or has speakers on the topics of organic plants, aeroponics, Calif. native plants and the effect of plants and trees on the environment and drought concerns.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

We need more people who care about our environmental future and the fact that we can make a difference. And Mike Garcia does that.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

He is well known in the community for his knowledge on the effect of organic gardening and involved in many organizations that include his positive impact on organic school gardens, and Rotary International for Environmental Action.
