RB Police to Set Up DUI Checkpoint

If you suspect someone of drunken driving, call 911.

, along with the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, will keep an eye out for people driving under the influence after Cinco de Mayo celebrations Thursday night.

One hundred Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies will deploy extra patrols as part of the county's Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force.

In addition, Redondo Beach officers will set up a driver's license and sobriety checkpoint from 7 p.m. Thursday until 2 a.m. Friday at a currently undisclosed location.

A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will fund the increased patrols. The Glendora Police Department is coordinating the Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force, which is named after the 100 agencies involved in the task force.

"Drunk driving is simply not acceptable and we will be out in force to protect motorists," said Glendora Police Chief Rod Castro.

"Drunk drivers pose a significant risk that has resulted in serious injury and death. The financial costs of a crash or an arrest for impaired driving can be life changing and the violator often faces jail time, the loss of their driver's license, higher insurance rates, attorney fees, time away from work and dozens of other expenses."

Authorities recommend party hosts follow these tips:

  • Arrange rides home and designated drivers for party attendees.
  • Provide nonalcoholic drinks for the designated drivers.
  • Limit the number of drinks served to each person.
  • Serve plenty of food.

Also, authorities said people who see drunken drivers should call 911 to report it.
