South Bay Gas Leak Evacuations Lifted

TORRANCE, CA — According to Torrance Public Works, all units have cleared Wednesday the scene of a natural gas leak in the area of 236th Place and Pennsylvania Avenue.
The leak prompted evacuations Tuesday of 13 homes in the area. All evacuations were lifted, but some crews had remained on scene as a precaution.
A 3-inch natural gas line was struck at an excavation work site and caused the leak.

Firefighters and Los Angeles County Fire Department, Health Hazmat Division personnel responded to the intersection of 236th Place and Pennsylvania Avenue around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday following reports of a natural gas leak, according to the Torrance Fire Department.
Investigators determined that a gas line was struck at an excavation workstation in the area and could not be isolated, prompting fire crews to deploy a hose line for safety precautions until the Southern California Gas Company arrived.

"TFD began atmospheric monitoring, sheltering in place, and evacuation in some areas. LA County Health Hazmat was notified and responded to the scene," the fire department said in a statement.
Crews remained at the scene to continue efforts to isolate the broken gas line. Fire officials reported Tuesday afternoon that the repair of the leak was expected to take several hours.
No injuries were reported.
