South Bay Reacts to Bin Laden's Death

Social media reveals emotional response to Osama bin Laden's death.

Throughout the South Bay, people took to social media to express their emotions regarding the , who was killed by U.S. special forces in a fire fight Sunday in Pakistan.

Bin Laden spearheaded the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, launching a War on Terror.

Residents were quite vocal on social broadcasting site Twitter, where many users "re-tweeted" a tweet from Redondo Beach voiceover artist Jerry Pulles.

"First he destroys Trump and now he's gonna announce that Osama is dead. Barack Obama is having the best week ever!" Pulles tweeted, referring U.S. President Barack Obama's speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

On the South Bay Facebook page, one of the administrators simply wrote, "YES !!" in response to the news of bin Laden's death.

"How does his death affect Redondo Beach? It makes us all VERY HAPPY!" Redondo Beach Councilman Steve Aspel wrote on Redondo Beach Patch's Facebook page.

Relief seemed to be the feeling of the evening for some.

"Osama Bin Laden was a man that finally received the death that had long hounded him," wrote Rancho Palos Verdes user Patrick Thornhart.

Redondo Beach user Ashley Wilson tweeted, "Osama Bin Laden is Dead but are the troops coming home, well not right now but hopefully soon."

Other Twitter users were concerned about the possible ramifications of bin Laden's death.

"Osama bin laden has kicked the bucket. Hope they don't wreak havoc on the US," wrote Hermosa Beach user @CAhawtie.

"I'm still in shock over what happened," Redondo Beach Patch contributor commented. "Glad we got him but of course we have to watch out for the other extremists out there. He wasn't the only one."

"When bin Laden was alive we had to pursue him into every country in the Mid-East and Southwest Asia," wrote Redondo Beach Patch commenter Antoine Churg. "Now that he is dead we have to continue on our wars in case someone might try to avenge bin Laden's death."

Active-duty U.S. Air Force serviceman Andrew from Manhattan Beach, who asked his last name and rank not be used because he was speaking outside the chain of command, said he was "very happy with finally having justice."

"It shows that what we are fighting for is not in vain," Andrew told Avelino. "However, he's only one person, not an entire organization, and there is still work to be done."
