25-Year-Old Inmate Found Dead At San Mateo County Jail: Police

The cause of death will be determined by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office, according to police.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A 25-year-old inmate was found dead over the weekend at a San Mateo County jail facility in Redwood City, according to authorities.

Sheriff’s personnel were notified shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday that an inmate was unresponsive in a housing unit at the Maple Street Correctional Center, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, which said the general population pod in which the man was housed had received a routine safety check a short time prior.

Despite lifesaving measures from sheriff’s personnel and medical staff, the man was pronounced dead at the jail, police said. The cause of death will be determined by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office, according to police.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, the coroner’s office and sheriff’s detectives are conducting independent investigations to determine the circumstances of the death, per protocol, according to the sheriff’s office. Once the investigations are complete, the sheriff’s office will make the findings public, police said.
