Caltrain New Monthly Fare Rate To Take Effect

Caltrain's Board of Directors approved changes to the rail agency's fares and parking fees.

SAN MATEO, CA -- Effective July 1, Caltain will increase the monthly pass rate from 14 to 15 days starting with July pass sale period beginning Thursday, June 21.

Caltrain’s Board of Directors approved changes to the rail agency’s fares and parking fees during its Aug. 3, 2017 board meeting. Fares were last adjusted on Oct. 1, 2017.

The monthly pass rate is calculated based on the number of days a passenger would need to make round-trip rides for the monthly pass to result in additional cost savings versus buying standard, daily tickets. The rate has been increased by an additional day, officials said.

The changes were approved to provide revenue that will allow the agency to fully fund the cost of operating the system. Unlike most transit systems, Caltrain does not currently receive dedicated funding to support its operations. The cost of operating and maintaining the service has increased due to the challenge of accommodating record-setting ridership demand and maintaining an aging diesel system in a state of good repair.
