Bay Area CHP Officer Struck By Tesla, Forcing Several Lanes To Close On Highway

A motorcycle officer was hospitalized after they were hit while trying to clear debris from the highway.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A California Patrol Officer is recovering in the hospital after a car crashed into them Monday on a San Mateo County highway, police said.

At around 3:07 p.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office sent out an alert that several lanes had been closed southbound on Interstate 280 just south of Alpine Road due to a car collision.

According to CHP, the officer was clearing debris from the highway on their motorcycle and had initiated a traffic break.

All lanes were closed and the CHP officer had turned on their emergency lights on their motorcycle when a driver in a 2026 Tesla Model Y crashed into them, CHP said.

The officer was ejected from the motorcycle and transported to the hospital where they are recovering from major non life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Tesla remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
