There is a planned DUI checkpoint scheduled in this Bay Area city.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Police have announced when and where there will be a planned DUI checkpoint Saturday in Redwood City, police said.

“The safety of our community remains our highest priority. If you know you’ll be drinking, we strongly encourage you to plan ahead and arrange for a safe and responsible way to get home," said Kristina Bell, Redwood City chief of police. "Whether it’s designating a sober driver, using a ride-share service, or taking public transportation, making the right choice can prevent accidents and save lives. Every measure taken to reduce impaired driving plays a significant role in improving traffic safety and helps keep our roads safe for everyone.”

From 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, there will be a DUI checkpoint first at El Camino Real near Carlos Avenue and then at Woodside Road near Bay Road, police said.

"DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road," a Redwood City Police Department press release stated.

Police said that impaired driving does not just include alcohol but also some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Medicinal and recreational cannabis are legal but driving under the influence of them is not, police said.
