A crew digging at a construction site in Woodside this morning ruptured a gas main and knocked out service to one customer, a PG&E spokesman said.
The break was reported at 11:13 a.m. in the 400 block of Glenwood Drive, a San Mateo County fire dispatcher said.
PG&E was notified that the three-quarter-inch steel line had ruptured at 11:22 a.m. Crews arrived at the scene about 20 minutes later, utility spokesman Jason King said. The scene was deemed safe, and crews are working to repair the line. Repairs are expected to be completed and power restored to the affected customer by 4 p.m., King said.
He said the rupture could have been avoided if the workers had called 811, a help line that lets contractors know the location of gas lines before they start digging.
"We urge anyone that's planning a digging project to call that number so we can mark the lines and they can complete the work safely and without any health risks," King said. More information about 811 can be found at http://www.call811.com/.
