Inmate Who Died At Peninsula Jail ID'd

A preliminary investigation indicates the incarcerated person likely died of natural causes, the Sheriff's Office said.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A San Mateo County jail inmate who found dead Thursday has been identified as Matthew Britton, a 34-year-old man whose last known address was in of Montague (Siskiyou County), the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office said.

A Maguire Correctional Facility staffer at around 5:40 p.m. found Britton unresponsive during a security check, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

County medical staff pronounced him dead at the scene.
