Kaiser Permanente Redwood City recognized for maternity care

Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center is being recognized as among the best hospitals in the United States for providing high-quality maternity care to new parents and their babies.

Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center is among the 259 hospitals named to the Leapfrog Group and Money magazine’s list of the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. Only 28 hospitals in California made the list and Kaiser Permanente Northern California has a total of 7 hospitals recognized including Modesto, Redwood City, Roseville, San Francisco, San Leandro, Santa Clara, and Vacaville.

The Leapfrog Group partnered with Money to analyze maternity care data submitted to the 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which was completed by over 2,200 hospitals in 2022. To be included in the list, eligible hospitals had to carry an A or B letter grade on the spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assessment. In addition, they were required to meet seven criteria specific to providing maternity care.

Kaiser Permanente Redwood City has also been recognized as one of Newsweek magazine’s Best Maternity Hospitals for 2022 and was named to the California 2022 Maternity Care Honor Roll.

“This honor recognizes our excellent maternity care,” said Sheila Gilson, Kaiser Permanente Redwood City’s senior vice president and area manager . “We’ve also been honored by Newsweek Magazine which reinforces that we’re providing safe care for new moms to deliver their babies.”

Kaiser Permanente Northern California is a leader in providing innovative approaches to maternal care and is working to improve equity in maternal health. Our hospitals are among the best in the country for meeting rigorous standards for maternity care, including low C-section rates, elective early deliveries and for following important protocols to safely protect new moms and their babies. Last year, nearly 44,000 babies were delivered at Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals.

“Our patients are at the center of all we do for new moms and their babies here at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City,” said Grace Firtch, MD, physician in chief of the medical center. “This latest maternity care honor is a testament to the high quality care provided by our physicians and staff.”

The 259 hospitals that made the cut are a combination of hospitals that provide care for uncomplicated pregnancies, as well as hospitals that provide care for high-risk deliveries, such as offering neonatal intensive care units, etc.
