Kids Of All Ages Invited To Check Out Big Trucks In This Bay Area City

National public works week offers a chance to learn about big trucks, heavy machinery and tools operated by city employees.

Kids love big trucks and so does the little kid still inside everyone. So come check them out at the Public Works Week Equipment Showcase on Wednesday morning in Redwood City.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, drivers, equipment operators and other professionals will be on-hand at 501 Winslow St. to answer questions about giant diesel trucks, electric tools and more at the public works equipment showcase as part of the National Public Works Week.

“The National Public Works Week theme, ‘People, Purpose, Presence,’ well represents our department and our work,” said Ann Stillman, Department of Public Works director. “We have talented and knowledgeable staff that work hard to accomplish our work and provide a high level of service to our residents, communities, County departments and the public at large.”

The DPW maintains over 4 million square feet of county facilities, oversees San Carlos and Half Moon Bay airports, manages 316 miles of unincorporated roads, sewers, and streetlights, provides 24/7 emergency response services, operates a $300 million budget, and has over 300 employees across five divisions.

“DPW is responsible for a wide range of day-to-day operations, provides 24/7 staff for some of our operations, is called to duty in emergencies, and more,” Stillman said. “Many aspects of our daily lives involve public works, and I look forward to recognizing DPW and our staff's many contributions to San Mateo County.”
