At Least 10 Hurt In Jail Fight At Bay Area Facility: Police
Dozens of inmates were involved in the fight and authorities used less-lethal methods to regain control, officials said.
REDWOOD CITY, CA — A jail fight involving dozens of inmates left four sheriff’s office employees and at least six inmates injured in San Mateo County, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. Friday in a housing unit in the Maguire Correctional Facility during recreation time while sheriff’s personnel were monitoring the inmates, authorities said.
About 30 inmates were estimated to have been involved in the fight, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, which noted the facility was immediately placed on lockdown and additional sheriff’s personnel responded.

“Trained personnel from the Sheriff’s Office utilized less-lethal options to swiftly and safely get the situation under control,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Four sheriff’s personnel suffered minor injuries from breaking up the fight and six inmates were taken to hospitals for treatment, all of whom were in stable condition and three of whom had been released back to the facility as of Friday afternoon, according to the news release.

“The correctional facility remained secure throughout the duration of the incident and there was no threat to public safety,” the news release said.
The fight is being investigated and the case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office to determine charges against the involved inmates, according to authorities.
