Man Attacked By Sharp Objects In San Mateo County, 2 Arrested, 1 Suspect At Large: Police

Police received reports that a group of people were attacking someone in a parking lot.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Police arrested two men July 15 in Redwood City after receiving reports that four or five people were attacking someone in a parking lot and video footage showed them chasing the victim armed "with what appeared to be long sharp objects," police said.

On July 15, Redwood City Police officers said they responded to reports that four to five people were attacking someone in a parking lot on the 1400 block of Ebener Street.

Officers in the immediate area said they arrived quickly to the scene and as they approached the saw a suspect's van leaving the area while bystanders pointed to it as the vehicle involved.

Officers said they followed the van as it fled eastbound on Woodside Road.

The van turned onto Hudson Street and collided with a parked car about half a mile from the original scene, police said.

The driver, identified as Manuel Chavarria, 47, fled on foot but was captured a short distance away, police said.

The front passenger, Gerardo Conrriquez, 36, was uncooperative and refused multiple commands to exit the van, police said. Officers deployed a K9 who bit the arm of the suspect, and officers said they were able to get him into custody.

Police said they believe a third suspect exited the van before officers arrived but they could not find him.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, was located but he was uncooperative, police said. He was not injured.

Surveillance footage from a nearby apartment complex showed Chavarria and Conrriquez exit the van and chase the victim while "armed with what appeared to be long sharp objects," police said.

Multiple witnesses identified the van, Conrriquez and Chavarria, police said.

Chavarria was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, evading a police officer, conspiracy to commit a crime, resisting arrest, vehicle hit and run and parole violation. Conrriquez was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime, resisting arrest and parole violation.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information about this case is encouraged to contact (650) 780-7116.
