Man Impersonates San Mateo County Sheriff's Deputy In Scam Call
The suspect identified himself with the name of an actual deputy and told the victim that he had two outstanding arrest warrants.
SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department warned residents Tuesday to be careful after an incident where a suspect attempted to solicit money from a San Carlos resident while impersonating a sheriff’s deputy.
The intended victim received a call Jan. 15 from the suspect, who identified himself with the name of an actual deputy and told the victim that he had two outstanding arrest warrants worth $2,000.
The victim was told to buy $2,000 in Moneypack Vouchers from a local CVS or Walmart and then provide the suspect with the numbers on the back of the voucher, according to the sheriff’s department.

The victim reported the call to the sheriff’s office.
According to the sheriff’s department, this type of scam attempt has happened before in San Mateo County. The sheriff’s office said it would never call people requesting money and anyone who receives such a call should contact local law enforcement.
