Navigation Center Breaks Ground In Redwood City
San Mateo County's first Navigation Center will provide short-term housing and other services for people experiencing homelessness.
REDWOOD CITY, CA — San Mateo County’s first Navigation Center broke ground in Redwood City on Wednesday.
Located east of Highway 101 off Maple Street, the Navigation Center will provide short-term housing and other services for people experiencing homelessness and replace the Maple Street Shelter.
The new 2.5-acre, $57 million Navigation Center will include 240 units with options for couples to stay together and provide social support services.

San Mateo County received $55 million in state funds from Gov. Gavin Newsom last December toward the center, which is slated for completion by the end of this year.
Other funding for the center included $5 million from John Sobrato, a $500,000 federal grant secured by Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) and American Rescue Plan funds.

The county is embarking on an ambitious goal of eradicating homelessness in 2022. According to the most recent one-day count in 2019, more than 1,500 residents in San Mateo County were experiencing homelessness.
