Opinion: Fireworks Return Demonstrates Community Teamwork

For the past two years, Redwood City  - like so many others  across America – has been forced to cancel its annual fireworks display in light of budget cuts, growing costs, and a shaky economic recovery. The cancellation came with great reluctance on the part of city officials, who see this annual event as an important time for thousands of families and residents from throughout the Peninsula to unite in celebration of community and our nation’s birthday.

This year, a coalition of corporate and private citizens stepped up to bring back the annual celebration on the waterfront. 

 led the way, picking up the Red, White and Blue sponsorship. Generous support followed from Lyngso, CEMEX, Cargill, Recology, Sares Regis, Informatica, One Marina - New Redwood City Housing, Kaiser Permanente, the Pete and Paula Uccelli Foundation, the Port of Redwood City, the City of Redwood City, and two anonymous donors.

We’re excited to once again host this free community event and proud to be part of a city whose citizens and businesses care about contributing to the greater good. This effort illustrates what can be achieved when the community works together toward a common goal.

The fireworks extravaganza will start around 9:15 p.m. at the Port of Redwood City and will be visible from Downtown and anywhere west of Highway 101. The Port is providing a public viewing area along the waterfront off of Seaport Court, but please note that parking is limited.  will open a parking lot for great viewing from that location.
