Peninsula Clean Energy Lowers 2025 Electricity Rates

Customers will a decrease on monthly bills.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Peninsula Clean Energy customers in San Mateo County will see lower electricity generation rates for at least the first half of 2025, further expanding the discount they already receive compared to PG&E, according to Peninsula Clean Energy.

The agency’s Board of Directors approved the rate reduction on Jan. 23, with the changes taking effect on Feb. 10.

The updated rates increase the discount to at least 10 percent below PG&E’s generation rates, which is expected to lower the average customer’s monthly electricity bill by around $7—potentially up to $20 or more for some higher energy users.

“It is increasingly difficult for everyone in our service territory to afford essential services like electricity, and we are doing what we can to help lower those costs,” said Shawn Marshall, CEO of Peninsula Clean Energy.

The move follows the board’s decision last year to freeze rates for the first six months of 2024 in response to a 15 percent PG&E rate increase.

“We all agree an even-deeper discount is needed this year to help our customers,” said Peninsula Clean Energy Board Chair and Burlingame Councilmember Donna Colson. “Our job is to serve the community, not shareholders. And one of the ways we do that is by keeping electricity as affordable as possible.”

Since its founding in 2016, Peninsula Clean Energy has offered customers rates at least 5 percent below PG&E’s baseline electric generation charges, saving residents more than $185 million.

The agency provides electricity generation, while PG&E remains responsible for electricity delivery and gas service.

In addition to lower rates, Peninsula Clean Energy offers energy programs, appliance upgrade incentives, and rebates to help customers transition to electric-powered homes and vehicles.
