Excessive Chlorine Flows through Water in Woodside Plaza Area

A malfunctioning valve inadvertently released a higher-than-normal level of chlorine into the water supply.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) announced this morning that water in the Woodside Plaza Area, bordered by Woodside Road, Alameda de las Pulgas, Goodwin Avenue, and Virginia Avenue may smell or taste of excessive chlorine.

The area includes , and the Woodside Plaza.

A malfunctioning valve released a higher-than-normal level of chlorine, used to disinfect the water, into the Redwood City area. The SFPUC has resolved the issue and is flushing the system to dilute the chlorine.

Though noticeable, the more chlorinated water is not dangerous and still meets all water quality requirements.

Officials caution people sensitive to chlorine to avoid using tap water directly for three to four hours. To remove residual chlorine, residents can flush their lines by running a bath and faucets until the smell disappears.
