Redwood City Hospital Named LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader

Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital was among the hospitals recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's 2022 Healthcare Equality Index.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City was recognized as an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader by the Human Rights Campaign, the hospital announced this week.

Sequoia Hospital was among the nearly 500 facilities around the country that earned a perfect score in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Healthcare Equality Index, which evaluates hospitals’ policies and practices regarding LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees.

The 2022 list evaluated more than 2,200 facilities nationwide.

“As caregivers, we are always actively seeking tools to help us enhance the care we provide for all our patients,” said Sequoia Hospital President Bill Graham in a news release. “Following the comprehensive framework outlined in the HEI application has helped us implement best practices for LGBTQ+ care, including policy enhancements, staff training, and additional support for patients and families.”

Sequoia Hospital underwent a comprehensive review of LGBTQ+ care policies and practices, working with a nationally recognized health expert, according to a news release.

“The Healthcare Equality Index, at its core, strives to ensure LGBTQ+ people are protected and affirmed by their healthcare providers and feel safe seeking services,” said Tari Hanneman, Director of Health & Aging at The Human Rights Campaign in a news release. “Our HEI active participants are truly pioneering the healthcare industry by implementing robust, comprehensive LGBTQ+ inclusive policies that hopefully, because of their work, will become standard practice.”
