Redwood City Neighbors Raise Money For Family Of Man Killed By Train

An online fundraiser has raised thousands to help return the man's body to his parents in Mexico.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Community members have rallied to raise thousands of dollars for the family of a man who died Tuesday after he was fatally struck by a train in Redwood City.

According to Caltrain, the collision happened shortly before 9 a.m. when a southbound train carrying 174 passengers struck a person on the tracks near Chestnut Street.

A GoFundMe page set up on behalf of the family identified the man who was killed as Juan Alonso Valverde Sanchez. The fundraiser's organizer said he was on his way to work when he was hit by the train, and the money will help get his body back home to his parents in Culiacan, Mexico.

By Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised $9,450, surpassing an $8,000 goal.
