Redwood City Police Sergeant Graduates From LAPD Leadership Program

Police Sergeant Nick Perna, completed 136 hours of the program designed to improve leadership among current command staff.

From The Redwood City Police Department: The men and women of the Redwood City Police Department would like to congratulate Sergeant Nick Perna on the successful completion of the Los Angeles Police Department West Point Leadership Academy. Sergeant Perna has completed this intensive 136 hour program directed at improving leadership among current command staff within police organizations. In 1992, Police Commissioner, Jesse A Brewer, a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, identified the most effective leadership training institution, the United States Military Academy at West Point. He coordinated with the Academy's Department of Behavioral Science and Leadership to develop quality leadership training for the Los Angeles Police Department. In 1994, five members of the LAPD participated in a program hosted by West Point faculty, officially known as the West Point Leadership and Command Program.

In January 1996, LAPD trained thirty employees assigned to various supervisory and executive positions to be Los Angeles Police Department Leadership Program Instructors. The program is a 136 hour, four-week course, approved by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). The program is also accredited with Woodbury University – Burbank for Bachelor and Master’s Degree credit. The principal aim of the Los Angeles Police Department Leadership Program is to teach individuals how to think more systematically about leadership, challenges and situations. The course teaches 27 behavioral science and adult education theories compiled from top universities in the nations.

The course requires students to solve realistic law enforcement leadership problems using the WPLP theories during three different settings. Chief JR Gamez noted, "Strong leadership is the hallmark of any successful organization and Sergeant Perna embodies all of the characteristics required to bring our organization to the next level. We are proud of his accomplishment and congratulate him on this great achievement.”For full details, view this message on the web.
