Redwood City Standoff Ends With Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting: Cops

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Officers fatally shot a man who tried to use three children as a shield Tuesday, ending a standoff that led to the closure of El Camino Real, Redwood City police said in a statement.

A woman was hospitalized with injuries not related to the shooting, and the children were unharmed, police said.

Officers Tuesday afternoon responded to the 1500 block of El Camino Real after a cell tower indicated the location was the origin of a 3:19 p.m. call to police dispatchers in which no one spoke but sound of a child screaming was heard in the background, police said.

Responding officers determined a domestic violence incident had occurred involving a man, a woman, and three children, police said.

Shortly after the officers arrived the man armed himself with a handgun and began attempting to use the children as a shield, police said.

“Officers began attempting to negotiate with the adult male, however, before communication could be established, officers perceived the adult male was attempting to shoot the adult female and/or the children,” police said in a statement.

“Officers responded immediately with lethal force and the male was incapacitated.”

Officers rendered immediate lifesaving aid and CPR as medical personnel were responding to the scene, police said.

Medical personnel from Redwood City Fire and AMR transported the man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

All of the involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, police said.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office has assumed full responsibility of the officer-involved shooting investigation, police said.

The California Department of Justice was notified of the incident.
